Startup20 Shikhar summit under India’s G20 presidency begins in Gurugram, Haryana
The Startup20 Shikhar summit under India’s G20 presidency began in Gurugram, Haryana. The Startup20 Engagement Group is hosting the two day Startup20 Shikhar summit.
- Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Prakash said, education and awareness play a vital role in nurturing a culturally sensitive startup ecosystem. He said, India’s recent climb on the global innovation index can be largely attributed to the dynamic startup ecosystem.
- During the summit, startup 20 communique was released, which urged G20 leaders to raise the joint investment in the global startup ecosystem to one trillion US dollar by 2030.
Prime Minister Modi inaugurates Sai Hira Global Convention Centre in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Sai Hira Global Convention Centre in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh. The grand event witnessed the presence of prominent dignitaries and devotees from around the world.
- The Convention Centre, constructed by the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, stands as a testament to the vision of promoting cultural exchange, spirituality, and global harmony.
- The Prime Minister emphasized that the next 25 years of India’s Independence would be regarded as the “Kartavya Kaal” (Era of Duties). As the nation strives towards achieving 100 years of independence, PM Modi proclaimed that the ‘Amrit Kaal’ has been rechristened as ‘Kartavya Kaal.’ He reiterated the country’s commitment to fulfilling its duties and responsibilities.
India’s first ‘Police Drone Unit’ launched in Chennai
The Greater Chennai City Police (GCP) has launched ‘Police Drone Unit’ for aerial surveillance over vast areas and quick detection of criminal activities.
- The project, which costs approximately Rs 3.6 crore according a press release by the GCP, was inaugurated by outgoing Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) C Sylendra Babu, in the presence of Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal at Besant Avenue, Adyar.
Centre announces scheme for minor rape victims
Recognising the trauma faced by minor rape victims, the government has decided to provide medical, financial and infrastructural support to victims in cases where the sexual assault results in pregnancies.
- The special scheme, announced by the Women and Child Development Ministry, would operate under the aegis of the Nirbhaya Fund and an amount of ₹74.1 crore has been allocated for the same.
- The new scheme, is launched under the aegis of the Nirbhaya scheme.The scheme aims to ensure both infrastructural and financial support for minor pregnant victims who have no means to fend for themselves.

Iran becomes new permanent member of SCO
Iran became the new permanent member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) at an India-hosted virtual summit of the grouping.
- In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the people of Iran on the country becoming a full member of the influential grouping.
- India hosted the summit in its capacity as the grouping’s current chair.

India doubles its share of global commercial services exports between 2005 and 2022: World Bank & WTO report
India has doubled its share of global commercial services exports to 4.4 percent in 2022 from 2 percent in 2005, according to a World Bank and World Trade Organization (WTO) report.
- The report titled ‘Trade in services for development’ said that in India, South Africa and Türkiye, jobs directly linked to cross-border services exports account for more than 10 percent of total services sector jobs.
- India has become a popular destination for medical travel, and hosted around 3.5 million foreign patients from 2009 to 2019,” the report said.

SAFF Championship 2023: India win record ninth title
The Indian men’s football team emerged victorious in a thrilling penalty shootout against Kuwait 5-4 in a thrilling penalty shootout, securing the SAFF Championship 2023 title at Bengaluru’s Sree Kanteerava Stadium.
- Ranked 100th in the latest FIFA rankings, India triumphed in their ninth SAFF Championship out of 14 editions. This victory marked their second consecutive triumph after winning the Intercontinental Cup the previous month.

Lallianzuala Chhangte, Manisha Kalyan named Footballers of the Year for 2022-23
Indian football team midfielder Lallianzuala Chhangte was named the AIFF Men’s Footballer of the Year for 2022-23 while Manisha Kalyan won her second consecutive Women’s Footballer of the Year award.
- The 26-year-old Lallianzuala Chhangte beat Nandhakumar Sekar and Naorem Mahesh Singh of East Bengal to win the award. Chhangte became only the second player from Mizoram, after Jeje Lalpekhlua (2016), to win the AIFF Men’s Player of the Year award.
- Manisha Kalyan pipped Dalima Chhibber and Ngangbam Sweety Devi to the AIFF Women’s Player of the Year 2022-23 award. It was her second Player of the Honour in two seasons. The 21-year-old Manisha Kalyan, who won the 2020-21 AIFF Women’s Emerging Footballer of the Year, currently plays as a forward for Apollon, a first division football club in Cyprus. Manisha Kalyan became only the third Indian female footballer to win the individual award two or more times after Bala Devi (three) and Bembem Devi (two).

NMDC wins ASSOCHAM Awards for Mineral Development and Employer Brand
India’s mining major, NMDC (National Mineral Development Corporation), was honored with two prestigious awards at the ASSOCHAM Business Excellence Awards 2023 held in Kolkata.
- The company received the ‘Mineral Development Award’ and the ‘Employer Brand of the Year Award’ in recognition of its significant contributions to the mining sector and its exemplary human resources practices.
- The awards were presented by Anurag Srivastava, IAS, Secretary of the Industry, Commerce, and Enterprise Department, Government of West Bengal, during the Indian Mining and Minerals Conclave 2023.
King Charles and Queen Camilla give environmental award to Indian conservationists
King Charles III and Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom recently presented the prestigious Elephant Family environmental award to Indian conservationists.
- The award ceremony recognized filmmaker Kartiki Gonsalves, the creative mind behind the Oscar-winning documentary “The Elephant Whisperers,” and the Real Elephant Collective (TREC), a group of 70 Adivasi artists.
- Both Gonsalves and TREC were acknowledged for their exceptional storytelling, advocacy for coexistence, and dedication to preserving India’s natural world.
